DECEMBER 2017

Head to Tennessee to Experience the Christmas Mountain Magic

Article featured in Southern Living written by Caroline McKenzie
Experience a little mountain magic in Tennessee this Christmas. Mountain towns and Christmas make a perfect pair. That’s especially true of Tennessee’s Monteagle Mountain and its tiny towns of Monteagle, Sewanee, Tracy City, and Cowan. Each year, people flock to this spot on the Cumberland Plateau, home of The University of the South, aka Sewanee. Take this winter pilgrimage to relax and breathe in the season’s beauty.

CELEBRATE TRADITIONS
If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, take in the spectacular annual Festival of Lessons and Carols held at Sewanee’s gorgeous All Saints’ Chapel on December 2 at 5 and 8 p.m. and on December 3 at 5 p.m.

The service is modeled after the one first sung at King’s College in Cambridge, England, in 1918.

GO SHOPPING
Check out The Lemon Fair in Sewanee and Monteagle’s The Amish Hippie and Mooney’s Market & Emporium, with the Organic Crescent Juice Bar at Mooney’s located out back.

EAT & DRINK
Tracy City’s Henry Flury & Sons Grocery is a general store/thrift shop/lunch stand. Don’t miss Jim Oliver’s Smoke House Restaurant in Monteagle. For upscale fare, head to the iconic High Point Restaurant.

LODGING
Bring the whole family to The Smoke House Lodge & Cabins! Stay over a few days in one of our cozy lodge rooms or one of our 21 Timber Frame or Log Cabins. We have live music every Friday & Saturday night. The shows are free and family friendly. Show times are 7-10:30pm and our cozy music room opens at 6pm.

58th Annual Festival of Lessons and Carols

Saturday, December 2nd & 3rd

Time: 5 PM & 8 PM CDT (Dec. 2); 5 PM CDT (Dec. 3);
Location: University of the South
The 58th annual Festival of Lessons and Carols at the University of the South will be celebrated at three services, two on December 2 (5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.), and one on December 3 (5:00 p.m.).

As part of the University mission and the program of education and formation of All Saints’ Chapel, the Festival Service of Lessons and Carols offers students, faculty, and staff in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Theology the opportunity to experience one of the oldest traditions of Anglican music and Advent expectation. As part of the University’s outreach to others, the Chapel is pleased to welcome the public by offering any available places in the service for reservation. Based on last years’ experience, however, the University expects that after accommodating students, faculty, staff, and their families, the number of places available to the public for reservation may be severely limited.

In our continuing effort to ensure open communication, below are our plans for the reservation system this year. Some highlights:

  • The University will determine on or before November 8, 2017, whether there will be places available to the general public for reservation.
  • If so, online reservations for the public will be available on November 15, 2017.
  • Guests will be able to reserve a specific seat – limit 2 per order.
  • All tickets will be available for pick-up at Convocation Hall – no receptions.
  • Unused tickets, if any, will be made available to walk-up guests (guests without a reservation) before each service. Walk-up guests must check in at Convocation Hall 30 minutes before the service to be placed on a waiting list.

If you have questions that are not answered here, please contact the Lessons and Carols office at 931.598.3247 or via email at lessonsandcarols@sewanee.edu.

Burgeis’s smooth voice, peppered with just enough twang and partnered with his masterful yet edgy guitar playing and tantalizing ivory tinkling, is what makes this ‘country-rocker’ one of the finest entertainers of his day.

Runaway Home

runawayhome_2016 The band, Runaway Home, is a “homecoming” of sorts. It was founded by three powerhouse singers looking for a road back to the music they grew up on and loved!

Their sound is strong three part harmony over lyrics that matter, wrapped in an acoustic style reminiscent of ‘70’s era radio. You might call them Retro-Commercial-Americana.

MUSIC ON THE MOUNTAIN @ The Smoke House

Friday, December 22nd ~ 7:00pm – 10:30pm

Greg Hall

“Probably the best guitar player in comedy. Or the best comedian in guitar-playing” ~ The Tennessean

Greg Hall, guitar in hand, delights audiences nationwide with his songwriting, and humorous observations of life in America.

Based in Nashville, Greg headlines comedy clubs around the country. His entertainment career began in Texas as a singer/songwriter after winning a prestigious Kennedy Center award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Musical Composition’. The next decade took him on a musical journey through thirty states, and Europe. He released five CD’s along the way, and shared stages with Shelby Lynne, Vern Gosdin, Jerry Jeff Walker, Eric Johnson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Keith Urban, Dan Seals, and others.

A near fatal car wreck took Greg out of the game for a while. Determined to get back on stage, he entered the realm of stand up comedy. Always a quick wit, he took his stage experience, songwriting chops and musicianship, and fast tracked into touring comedy clubs around the nation. Now, as a headliner, Greg spends at least twenty weeks a year performing in top comedy clubs.

Greg observes life’s mishaps with a twinkle in his eye, and hope. The result is an achingly fun, comedic musical journey sharing his hard-won, slightly skewed wisdom.
