Head to Tennessee to Experience the Christmas Mountain Magic

Article for Southern Living by Caroline McKenzie

Experience a little mountain magic in Tennessee this Christmas. Mountain towns and Christmas make a perfect pair. That’s especially true of Tennessee’s Monteagle Mountain and its tiny towns of Monteagle, Sewanee, Tracy City, and Cowan. Each year, people flock to this spot on the Cumberland Plateau, home of The University of the South, aka Sewanee. Take this winter pilgrimage to relax and breathe in the season’s beauty.

CELEBRATE TRADITIONS

If you’re lucky enough to get tickets, take in the spectacular annual Festival of Lessons and Carols held at Sewanee’s gorgeous All Saints’ Chapel on December 8th at 4 p.m. then again at 7 p.m. CDT and on December 9th at 4 p.m. CDT. The service is modeled after the one first sung at King’s College in Cambridge, England, in 1918.

GO SHOPPING

Check out The Lemon Fair in Sewanee and Monteagle’s The Amish Hippie and Mooney’s Market & Emporium, with the Organic Crescent Juice Bar at Mooney’s located out back.

EAT & DRINK

Tracy City’s Henry Flury & Sons Grocery is a general store/thrift shop/lunch stand. Don’t miss Jim Oliver’s Smoke House Restaurant in Monteagle. For upscale fare, head to the iconic High Point Restaurant.

Robert Burgeis

Robert Burgeis is one of Nashville’s few piano playing, guitar picking artists who is also a seasoned songwriter and producer. With his diverse talent and love for country music, he has been dubbed as ‘The Rednek RokStar’. Burgeis’s smooth voice, peppered with just enough twang and partnered with his masterful yet edgy guitar playing and tantalizing ivory tinkling, is what makes this ‘country-rocker’ one of the finest entertainers of his day.

Jason Lee Wilson

Scots-Irish, German, Swiss, Italian, and Cherokee…no one is more American in spirit, word or pedigree. Jason is a balladeer from the Southern highlands of North America who sings what he knows; he has stayed true to his roots, and has penned many songs romanticizing the history and tradition of his own life.

He could be described as traditional country meets folklore meets high energy rockabilly.

Daniel Lawrence Walker

Recording and touring artist, Daniel Lawrence Walker, channels roots and rhythms through a soulful voice and slide guitar ranging from bluesy swagger to subtle softness. His trademark half-slide Shubb Axys allows him to play bottleneck with a quick flick of the thumb and fingers. He keeps toes tapping during solo shows when looping his rhythm part live, and ripping the slide over the top. Walker grew up in Fort Worth, Texas and moved to Nashville in 2008.

Greg Hall

“Probably the best guitar player in comedy. Or the best comedian in guitar-playing” ~ The Tennessean

Greg Hall, guitar in hand, delights audiences nationwide with his songwriting, and humorous observations of life in America.

Based in Nashville, Greg headlines comedy clubs around the country. His entertainment career began in Texas as a singer/songwriter after winning a prestigious Kennedy Center award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in Musical Composition’. The next decade took him on a musical journey through thirty states, and Europe. He released five CD’s along the way, and shared stages with Shelby Lynne, Vern Gosdin, Jerry Jeff Walker, Eric Johnson, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Keith Urban, Dan Seals, and others.

A near fatal car wreck took Greg out of the game for a while. Determined to get back on stage, he entered the realm of stand up comedy. Always a quick wit, he took his stage experience, songwriting chops and musicianship, and fast tracked into touring comedy clubs around the nation. Now, as a headliner, Greg spends at least twenty weeks a year performing in top comedy clubs.

Greg observes life’s mishaps with a twinkle in his eye, and hope. The result is an achingly fun, comedic musical journey sharing his hard-won, slightly skewed wisdom.
